What do you do when you win $1.7 million in a lawsuit against a major beverage manufacturer? You go back and ask for more. That’s exactly what the Beastie Boys are doing. Earlier this year, the group won a suit against the makers of Monster Energy drinks for copyright infringement stemming from a 2012 ad that ran primarily online. The clip was a recap of a Canadian snowboarding competition backed by a suite of five Beasties songs, none of which had been licensed by the company.
Now, the group is trying to squeeze the company for $2.4 million more. Saying that Monster refused to engage in good-faith negotiations and used other tactics to deliberately drive up the cost of litigation, resulting in what the Beasties’ lawyers referred to as a Pyrrhic victory.
